Winter Skills



This enjoyable day course covers the basic skills needed to start walking in the Winter mountains. A sample itinerary is given below. The vary nature of winter mountaineering means there has to be some flexibility in course content depending on the conditions we encounter.




  • Ice Axe- Use and selection,

  • Ice Axe Self Arrest and Self Belay

  • Crampons- Types, Selection and Use

  • Step Kicking and Step Cutting

  • Avalanche awareness


We may also have a chance to look at:

  • Emergency Shelters

  • Winter Navigation


By the end of the day you will be well on your way to

learning the basic skills to travel safely in the Scottish

mountains in Winter.



Possible Venues include Coire Na Ciste on Ben Nevis,

Coire Dubh on Aonach Mor,

Stob Coire Nan Lochan in Glen Coe and others.
